Games of July 3, 2021

TRIPLE-A — TACOMA RAINIERS

RECAP: The Rainiers rallied for 2 runs in the bottom of the 8th inning, but it wasn’t enough as Tacoma fell to Reno 8–3 on Saturday night. 2B Donovan Walton (2x4, R, 2B, HR, RBI) and LF Eric Filia (2x2, R, HR, RBI, 2 BB) combined to go 4-for-6 with 2 runs scored, 1 double, 2 home runs and 2 RBI. Both Walton and Filia homered for the first time this season. Filia hit a solo home run to lead off the 2nd inning and Walton hit a solo home run to lead off the 8th inning. 1B Jantzen Witte (1x3, 2B, RBI, SF) recorded the Rainiers only other hit and RBI in the game. Starter Robert Dugger (3.0,8,6,6,2,2,2HR) recorded the loss, allowing 6 runs on 8 hits over 3.0 innings. RH Wyatt Mills (2.0,2,2,2,1,3) allowed 2 runs in the 5th inning, RH Erik Swanson (1.0,1,0,0,0,0), RH Taylor Guerrieri (1.0,0,0,0,1,1) and LH Daniel Zamora (2.0,2,0,0,0,5) combined to strikeout 6 over 4.0 scoreless innings in relief.

REHAB ASSIGNMENT — RH Erik Swanson began his rehabilitation assignment with Tacoma on July 3…he made his first appearances on July 3 vs. Reno, allowing 1 hit in a scoreless 6th inning…Swanson was placed on the 10-day Injured List with a right groin strain…in 2 stints with Seattle (4/12–15 & 5/2-c), Swanson is 0–0 with 1 save and a 0.69 ERA (1 ER, 13.0 IP) in 9 games (2 starts)…he has limited opponents to a .098 (4x41) while walking 6 and striking out 14…he opened the season on the Mariners Alternate Site roster, but did not appear in any games with the Rainiers this season.

OF NOTE:

· GIVE ME 23 — C Cal Raleigh hit safely in 23 consecutive games (5/15–6/17)…during the streak he hit .396 (38x96) with 22 runs scored, 13 doubles, 1 triple, 6 home runs, 22 RBI, 2 HBP and 6 walks…it is the longest hitting streak of his career (previous: 8, 7/1–10/19 w/High-A Modesto).

· HOT — Since May 13, C Cal Raleigh has hit safely in 31 of 36 games, including 15 multi-hit contests, batting .338 (49x145) with 30 runs scored, 19 doubles, 1 triple, 7 home runs, 32 RBI, 3 HBP and 13 walks…overall this season he has hit safely in 34 of 41 games, batting .319 (53x166) with 32 runs scored, 20 doubles, 1 triple, 8 home runs, 35 RBI, 4 HBP, 14 walks and 3 stolen bases.

· A LEADER AMONG US — C Cal Raleigh ranks among Triple-A West leaders in doubles (2nd, 20), extra-base hits (3rd, 29), total bases (9th, 99), hits (9th, 53), RBI (9th, 35) and 10th in average (.319).

DOUBLE-A — ARKANSAS TRAVELERS

RECAP: C Brian O’Keefe and 3B Josh Morgan each homered and combined to drive in 7 runs as Arkansas defeated Tulsa 7–4 on Saturday night. O’Keefe (3x5, 2 R, HR, 4 RBI) hit his 11th home run of the season with a solo shot leading off the 2nd innings. O’Keefe’s 11 home runs at T6th-most in the Double-A Central this season. Morgan recorded his 5th home run of the season with a 3-run blast with 2 outs in the 5th inning. 2B Jordan Cowan (1x4), CF Stephen Wrenn (1x4, R) and SS Connor Kopach (1x3, R, BB) each collected 1 of the Travelers 8 hits. Starter Devin Sweet (5.0,5,2,2,4,6,HR) improved to 2–4 on the season with the win, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits while walking 4 and striking out 6 over 5.0 innings. RH Jack Anderson (2.0,2,1,1,1,2,HR) and RH Collin Kober (1.0,2,1,1,1,2,HR) combined to allow 2 runs over 3.0 innings, while LH Raymond Kerr (1.0,1,0,0,0,0,3) allowed 1 hit and struck out 3 in a scoreless 9th inning to earn his 1st save of of the season.

JUNE PITCHER OF THE MONTH: Arkansas Travelers right-hander Penn Murfee was named Double-A Central June Pitcher of the Month by Minor League Baseball. He went 3–0 with a 1.38 ERA in 4 starts. He allowed 15 hits and 4 earned runs while striking out 30 over 26.0 innings. Opponents batted just .167 against him. On June 18, he threw a 3-hit shutout against Tulsa with a career-high 11 strikeouts. Murfee, 27, was selected by Seattle in the 33rd round of the 2018 MLB Draft out of Santa Clara University.

WELCOME TO ARKANSAS: OF Julio Rodriguez was promoted to Double-A Arkansas from High-A Everett. Rodriguez will make his AA debut on June 29. Rodriguez reached base safely in his final 12 games with Everett, including at least 1 hit in 11 games (5/22–6/16), batting .340 (17x50) with 12 runs scored, 3 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run, 8 RBI 2 HBP, 6 walks and 2 stolen bases…overall with Everett, Rodriguez has hit safely in 24 of 28 games this season, including 9 multi-hit contests, batting .325 (38x117) with 29 runs scored, 8 doubles, 2 triples, 6 home runs, 21 RBI, 3 HBP, 14 walks and 5 stolen bases…at the time of his promotion on June 28, Rodriguez led the High-A West League in batting average (.325), slugging percentage (.581) and OPS (.992)…he also ranked 3rd in on-base percentage (.410).

· LET’S GO STREAKING — INF Jordan Cowan recorded a season-high 10-games hitting streak (6/4–30), batting .390 (16x41) with 9 runs, 2 doubles, 2 home runs, 6 RBI, 3 walks and 5 stolen bases…he has hit safely in 13 of his last 15 games (6/2-c), including 7 multi-hit contests, batting .323 (20x62) with 11 runs, 2 doubles, 2 home runs, 7 RBI, 3 walks and 7 stolen bases.

· HOMER HAPPY — INF Jordan Cowan has recorded 2 multi-home run games this season: Aug. 24, 2016 vs. San Jose w/Bakersfield (2x3, 2 R, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 3 BB) and June 27 at NW Arkansas (2x5, 2 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI).

· LOTS OF HITS — INF Bobby Honeyman reached base safely in 20 of his last 22 games, including at least 1 hit in 17 games (6/4-c)…during this stretch he is batting .326 (28x86) with 13 runs, 7 doubles, 3 home runs, 9 RBI, 14 walks and 1 stolen base.

· HOT — OF Stephen Wrenn has hit safely in 8 of his last 10 games (6/22-c), batting .275 (11x40) with 4 runs scored, 1 double, 1 home run, 2 RBI, 1 walk and 4 stolen bases.

IMMACULATE INNING x2 — LH Brandon Williamson tossed an immaculate bottom of the 1st inning on 6/24 at NW Arkansas (Kevin Merrell strikes out swinging, Bobby Witt Jr. strikes out swinging & Nick Pratto struck out looking)…Williamson also tossed an immaculate in 3rd inning on 5/29 at Vancouver w/Everett (Ronny Brito called out on strikes, David Schneider strikes out swinging & D.J. Neal strikes out on a foul tip)…he also struck out the side in the 4th inning, a stretch of 6 consecutive strikeouts (7.1,2,1,1,1,13,HR,HB).

HIGH-A — EVERETT AQUASOX

RECAP: The AquaSox scored 3 runs over the first 3 inning for an early lead, but also added 8 runs between the 6th through 8th innings as Everett defeated Vancouver 11–5. With the win, the AquaSox move into first place with a 0.5 game lead over Eugene. DH Kaden Polcovich (1x3, R, HR, 5 RBI) drove in a career-high 5 runs, including hitting a grand slam home run with 2 outs in the 8th inning. The home run was Polcovich’s 8th of the season, which is the most by an AquaSox player this season. 3B Austin Shenton (2x4, 2 R, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, BB) recorded 2 hits, including hitting his 7th home run of the season with a 2-run blast with 1 out in the 1st inning. CF Cade Marlowe (2x4, R, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI, BB), RF Zach DeLoach (1x4, R, BB), C Carter Bins (1x3, R, RBI, 2 BB), 1B Jack Larsen (1x4, 2 R), 2B Joseph Rosa (1x3, RBI, BB) and LF Coonor Hoover (1x4, R, 2B) each collected at least 1 of the team’s 10 hits. Starter George Kirby (5.0,3,0,0,2,8) improved to 3–2 on the season with the win, allowing only 3 hits while walking 2 and striking out 8 over 5.0 scoreless innings. RH Igor Januario (1.0,2,3,3,2,0), RH Stephen Kolek (2.0,2,1,1,1,2) and RH Kyle Hill (1.0,2,1,1,0,1) combined to allo 4 runs over the final 4.0 innings in relief to secure the win.

JUNE PLAYER OF THE MONTH: Everett AquaSox outfielder Zach DeLoach was named High-A West June Player of the Month by Minor League Baseball. He led the league in batting average (.363), hits (33), runs (23) and doubles (12) and was third in total bases (50) and fourth in OPS (1.003). He hit safely in 19 of 21 June contests and recorded 10 multi-hit games and a 12-game hitting streak. DeLoach, 22, was selected by Seattle in the second round of the 2020 MLB Draft out of Texas A&M University.

· WALK THIS WAY — RH George Kirby issued his first career walk in the 2nd inning on May 14 vs. Tri-City…dating back to 2019, he tossed 27.2 consecutive innings without allowing a walk to open his career (23.0 innings in 2019 and 4.2 innings in 2021)…overall this this season he is 3–2 with a 2.84 ERA (10 ER, 31.2 IP) in 7 starts…he has limited opponents to a .233 (28x120) average, while walking 7 and striking out 39.

· STRONG START — RH Levi Stoudt is 4–1 with a 2.98 ERA (15 ER, 45.1 IP) in 9 starts this season…he has limited opponents to a .200 (32x160) average, while walking 28 and striking out 48…struck out a season-high 10 batters on June 2 vs. Hillsboro (5.0,5,1,1,3,10)…he earned his first career win on June 10 vs. Eugene (5.2,5,3,3,5,5,HR).

RECAP: The Nuts scored 4 runs in the 1st inning for an early lead and went on to add 1 run in the 4th and 4 more in the 9th inning as Modesto defeated Visalia 9–5 on Friday night.
